You’ve probably marveled at your skin’s regenerative ability — maybe when you last scraped your knee or cut yourself shaving. In the following weeks, your body sealed up the cut and created new skin over it.
You don’t have to wait for an injury to harness that impressive capacity, though. With a treatment called microneedling, Robert M. Olson, MD and our team have a way to trick your skin into thinking it was hurt so that it goes to work creating new, healthy cells. With SkinPen® microneedling — available at our LH Spa & Rejuvenation offices in Livingston and Madison, New Jersey — we can address many of the causes of an uneven skin tone.
How does this treatment work? And is microneedling the right solution to your skin tone woes? Let’s take a look.
Microneedling 101
Microneedling works because the SkinPen creates tiny pinpricks in the surface of your skin. (Don’t worry, we can apply a numbing cream to keep you comfortable.)
Your skin registers those pinpricks as injuries. This kickstarts its healing processes. Not only does your body create new, healthy skin cells — helping you get a more radiant, younger-looking complexion — but it also triggers changes under the surface.
SkinPen microneedling is a type of collagen induction therapy (CIT), meaning it stimulates your skin’s production of collagen. This is the protein that keeps your skin taut and supple, but you make less of it as you age. With CIT, we can increase the amount of collagen in your face, helping your skin tone look smoother.
Because it supports the creation of new skin cells and new collagen, Dr. Olson often recommends SkinPen microneedling to address:
- Dark spots
- Scars, including acne scars
- Large pores
- Fine lines and wrinkles
In short, if your skin tone is uneven, this minimally invasive treatment can help.
What to expect with the SkinPen
SkinPen treatment comes with minimal downtime. You might have some swelling or redness for the rest of the day, so we often recommend scheduling your appointment in the afternoon and relaxing at home afterward.
Most people notice improvements in their skin tone within a week. Over the weeks that follow, your skin should continue to improve as it creates new collagen.
Some people get the skin tone evenness that they want with just one SkinPen treatment. You may, however, want to get a series of treatments to give you more dramatic results.
In a similar vein, the SkinPen works well on its own. But if you’re looking for skin transformation, don’t hesitate to tell Dr. Olson. He can combine your microneedling with add-ons like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or exosomes to drive even more results.
